Think of a servo motor as a highly trainable, powerful athlete. The servo driver is its dedicated coach and energy source. It receives a low-power command signal (often a position, velocity, or torque reference) from a primary motion controller (PLC, CNC, dedicated controller). The driver’s job is to amplify this signal significantly and deliver precisely the right amount of electrical current (voltage and frequency) to the servo motor’s windings at exactly the right time.
This process creates the powerful, controlled magnetic fields that drive the motor’s rotation or linear movement, directly translating the input command into highly accurate physical motion. Crucially, the driver constantly monitors the motor’s actual movement via feedback devices like encoders or resolvers connected to the motor shaft. It compares this real-time feedback to the commanded target in a continuous closed-loop control system (most commonly using sophisticated PID control algorithms). If there’s any error (deviation between command and actual position/speed), the driver instantly adjusts its output power to correct it, ensuring exceptional precision and rigidity even under varying loads.
