microservices interview questions

Published 2026-01-19

Microservices – sounds sleek, right? Everyone’s talking about them. But here’s the thing: talking is easy. Actually making them work is another story. They can be… unpredictable, like a set of gears that don’t quite mesh. One component hesitates, another races ahead, and suddenly the whole system starts to wobble. It’s frustrating, especially when you’re trying to build something reliable. You need each piece to move in sync, not fight against each other.

That’s where the interview questions come in. You can’t afford to hire someone who thinks microservices are just about splitting a monolith. It’s deeper. It’s about resilience, communication, and design. Get it wrong, and you’re looking at a tangled web of timeouts and failures.

So, how do you find the people who get it? The ones who can design not just for now, but for the messy, real-world later?

You might start by asking about the basics. But then, scratch beneath that surface.

What happens when Service A talks to Service B and B is just… slow?

It’s a simple question. But the answers can be telling. Are they thinking about timeouts, circuit breakers, fallbacks? Or is it just a blank stare? Resilience isn’t an add-on. It’s woven into the design from the start. You want someone who sees the potential for a jam in every conversation between parts and has a plan for it.

Then there’s data. That’s always a twist.

Each service has its own data store. How do you keep things consistent?

You’ll hear about eventual consistency, distributed transactions, saga patterns. Listen closely. Are they describing a philosophy or a practical implementation? The theory is clean. Practice is often messy. They should know that. They should respect that messiness and have strategies to navigate it, not just ignore it.

And what about testing? It’s a whole different ballgame.

Testing one service is one thing. Testing how they work together in the wild? How would you approach that?

You’re looking for signs of pragmatism here. Containerization, contract testing, staged environments. But also a dose of reality. Some things you only catch when everything’s moving. The candidate who admits that, and describes a thoughtful, layered approach to testing, is often the one you want.

It’s not just about technical trivia. It’s about mindset. You need problem-solvers, not just answer-reciters. The best questions reveal how someone thinks under pressure, how they balance the ideal with the achievable.

Think of it like choosing a component for a precise machine. You wouldn’t pick a part just because the specs look good on paper. You’d want to know how it performs under load, how it communicates with the parts around it, and how it handles the unexpected vibrations of daily operation. The interview is your quality check.

It’s about building a team that doesn’t just build services, but builds a system. One that’s robust, understandable, and can evolve without crumbling. That’s the real goal. It’s what separates a fragile collection of endpoints from a truly powerful architecture.

Finding those people is the first, most critical step in that journey. Get the questions right, and the rest starts to fall into place.
